Abstract (300 words maximum)

The development of a new family of bisbenzmidazolium salts will be presented. These salts are important precursors for the synthesis of bidentate N-heterocyclic carbene ligands. The synthesis of these salts was designed to be modular in nature to allow for the facile incorporation of various alkyl groups as nitrogen substituents. All the intermediates have been characterized by 1H and 13C - NMR spectroscopy as well as by elemental analysis.
