Current Issue: Volume 2, Issue 1 (2018) Explorations: Fall 2017 Learning Communities
IntroductionEach year, approximately 1,500 incoming first-year students decide to begin their college journeys at KSU by enrolling in academic learning communities. These courses are taught by faculty dedicated to first-year student success and may explore a common theme or social identity. The work featured in this volume offers a look into the diverse topics that students can explore through active, integrative learning. Multimedia projects work to raise awareness about issues ranging from racial injustice in the U.S. and gender inequities in India to the importance of co-curricular engagement for college students. Drawings from the Architecture studio demonstrate the creative possibilities of hands-on learning. A community outreach project provides an opportunity to promote literacy and leadership to elementary school children. These pieces, and the others contained in this collection, reflect the exciting discoveries students can make in their first semester of college and showcase the formation of collaborative relationships between members of the university community.
