Description

In January 2024, members of the University of Wyoming Libraries and the Wyoming Geographic Information Science Center (WYGISC) received funding from the Wyoming DataHub to build a web-accessible scholarly index for all published research outputs linked to the University of Wyoming. The Wyoming Research & Data Index (WRDI) aims to make scholarly publication data findable and transparent for the extended Wyoming community. Goals for this project include identifying opportunities for statewide researcher collaborations, assessing institutional trends in open access publishing, and cataloging article processing charges (APCs) paid by our researchers.

This presentation will detail the collaborative process of constructing WRDI using data obtained from the scientific knowledge graph OpenAlex. Workflows for harvesting publication metadata using the OpenAlex API via Python, building and updating a dynamic metadata pipeline and PostGres database, and designing the publicly available interface with Umbraco will be showcased. Challenges, including crosswalking heavily nested JSON outputs, frequent changes to OpenAlex’s metadata schema, and difficulties obtaining data for specific publication formats and disciplines will be discussed. In addition, potential implications for research impact, outreach, and open access publishing will be explored.

Author Bios

Katharine Teykl is one of two Digital Scholarship Librarians at the University of Wyoming, where she leads educational outreach on computing, digital humanities, and more. She holds a dual M.L.S. and M.A. in Musicology from Indiana University-Bloomington. Her research interests include text and data mining, computational approaches to musicological research, optical music recognition, and the integration of digital humanities into library services. In 2023, she received a Humanities Research Group Fellowship from the Wyoming Institute of Humanities Research (WIHR) and remains an active researcher and practitioner in digital humanities.

Jordan Hemingway is the Data Services Librarian at UW Libraries, where she develops research data management, publication, and curation training and support. Her work includes managing the Wyoming Data Repository, consulting on research data workflows, conducting outreach and exploring ways to increase research data discovery. Her research interests span linked data, metascience, and open movements. Outside of work, she enjoys trail running, DIY projects, and playing fetch with her cat, Hazel.

Sierra Pandy is the Scholarly Communications and Open Publishing Librarian at the University of Wyoming. Their work focuses on supporting student and faculty work in the institutional repository including providing resources, information, and consultations regarding open access publishing opportunities. In addition, they also coordinate transformative agreements for their University, as well as offer copyright and author rights consultations.

Esther Perez is one of two Digital Scholarship Librarians at University of Wyoming, with a focus on supporting the STEM disciplines. She holds an MS in physics from Texas A&M University in addition to an MLIS from San Jose State University. In her free time she enjoys spending time with her partner, her two cats, and exploring the outdoors.
