Description

With open access established as a sharing and publishing practice in many academic disciplines, authors are increasingly expecting and seeking assistance in identifying opportunities and funding for their open access publishing activities. But navigating this landscape can be challenging, and libraries can have an important role in educating authors to help them understand options, costs, and benefits. By contributing to this open access support work, Libraries can help meet the needs of their constituents while also developing their own skills and knowledge in this area.

This presentation will discuss library experiences in supporting open access publication funding at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG). Since 2011, the UNCG University Libraries have offered awards through the Open Access Publishing Fund, which helps authors offset the costs of article processing charges (APCs). In recent years, the Libraries have pursued additional open access funding options through transformative deals with publishers who offer APC waivers and discounts to affiliated authors. While UNCG authors have more funding options than ever before, each publisher funding deal is different, and the library is increasingly called on to provide support to authors who are seeking funding.

This lightning talk will focus on challenges and opportunities associated with helping campus authors navigate open access publication options. And while the funding offerings discussed are specific to UNCG, the issues and lessons learned provide broader relevance among institutions providing or seeking to provide open access publication funding support. Attendees will be encouraged to consider possible opportunities and applicability in their own institutions.
