Description of Work

Affluent families and individuals of the 19th century had many architectural styles to choose from when building their home and it was important to choose the correct one, as each one would convey a different message to the public. Arnoldus Vanderhorst Brumby (1809-1887), the superintendent for the Georgia Military Institute between the years 1851 and 1858, chose the Greek Revival style for his house overlooking the Georgia Military Institute, now known as Brumby Hall. The Greek Revival style was chosen for this construction due to the deeper connotations it imposed, that of leadership and strength, as Brumby felt they represented the school the best (Frey).
