Abstract (300 words maximum)

This presentation will explore the career of the American director, screenwriter, and producer Madeline Anderson. Anderson grew up in a time where the films she watched didn’t reflect her experience as a black girl living in the pre-Civil Rights era, which motivated her to pursue a career in the film and television industry. Madeline broke records and became the first African American woman to executive produce a nationally aired television series titled The Infinity Factor (1977). Her accomplishments as a filmmaker and television writer are noted as she is credited with opening doors for many women in the industry, specifically women of color. Through this presentation, I will explore Madeline Anderson’s career, dissect her most significant television projects, and review her accomplishments in film and television in the 1970s.
