Abstract

This is a metal song I wrote and recorded as an interpretation of Walt Whitman's poem Song of Myself, part 32. Whitman writes about how he envies animals and their pure, blissful nature. I decided to write from the perspective of the animals, instead throwing shade towards humanity and its flaws.

This piece was created in response to a prompt that asked students to adapt a poem into a new form of media. Students analyzed both the poem's original purpose and meaning, as well as the adaptation process, in order to understand the components of storytelling and how to communicate effectively to an audience in multiple genres.
