Aims & Scope
Students who were enrolled in a Composition I or II course at KSU during the calendar year prior to publication can submit work they completed for these courses. The Emerging Writers Journal accepts submissions in five categories:
- Academic Research Project: Text-based submissions are normally between 2,500-5,000 words, double-spaced, and are focused on a deep exploration of a single topic through rigorous research. They include multiple sources with citations in MLA or APA format. Projects can be produced as multimodal products, such as research-based podcasts or videos. Multimodal projects should also demonstrate use of sources and excellence in composition.
- Creative Nonfiction: These submissions should not exceed 2,500 words, double-spaced. They are stories based on students’ real-life experiences, although they may be shaped in creative and unexpected ways. Some examples include literacy narratives and dialogic remixes. Note: Please do not submit original fiction or poetry not based on an assignment, as our journal does not publish those genres.
- Short Analysis: These short essays range from 500-1,500 words and are typically focused on how persuasion works in a variety of texts, such as advertisements, speeches, or films.
- Faculty-Mentored Spotlight: These submissions are nominated by a faculty member who will co-write with you about your assignment, your writing process, and why your essay is an example of excellence in student writing. Only students who have been nominated by your ENGL 1101 or 1102 instructor should submit to this category.
- Work-in-Progress: This category is for examples of a full writing process, from brainstorming to outlining to research to first drafts to final drafts. You can submit a portfolio (one long word document with screencaps embedded) of all the writing you did while creating a final draft. You will include a statement describing your “work in progress” and how it resulted in a final project. Submissions in this category are often used as student examples in KSU’s First-Year Composition courses. Please ask for details and work with your ENGL 1101 or 1102 instructor if you plan to submit to this category.
Submissions for each issue will be received during the calendar year and until February 15 of the following year. For example, a student enrolled in ENGL 1101 or 1102 during the calendar year of 2025 can submit work from that class at any time during 2025 and up until February 15 of 2026. New issues will typically be published in April of each year. Note that editors do not read submissions during the Fall semester, so you can expect notification after March 1 of each year, regardless of when you submit.
