Abstract

The exigencies of producing students who are able to meet the demands of the global society have given second language study a new sense of purpose and importance among educators and policy-makers. Proficiency assessment, however, still relies heavily upon traditional discrete-item testing that focuses on grammatical structures and is often devoid of meaningful context. Total Physical Response (TPR), long a mainstay of foreign language instruction, has been frequently overlooked as a viable means for assessing proficiency. TPR is not only a valid means for gauging foreign language proficiency at increasingly complex levels, but it is capable of reinforcing core foreign language skills in a manner that appeals to students with various learning styles.
