Description

How do you get students excited about research data management? With Gummi Bears and hands-on fun! Presenters will introduce an active learning session for students of all experience levels to learn basic data management concepts and techniques. Presenters will share their design process, highlighting how Gummi Bears lessened students’ intimidation with this complex topic. A detailed breakdown of workshop assessment, including deliverables, learning objectives, and supported ACRL frames, will provide context for how to adapt the workshop to various experience levels. Participants will be provided access to workshop materials, including promotional materials and a best practices handout.

Author Bios

Jeff Mortimore is the Discovery Services Librarian at Georgia Southern University. Since starting at Georgia Southern in 2015, Jeff has spearheaded or participated in a wide range of activities to increase the collection of and access to freely available and open access (FAOA) resources. Jeff managed Georgia Southern's institutional repository for several years and currently provides data management planning and archiving services to the campus community. He recently authored Georgia Southern's Guidelines for Management of Unsubscribed FAOA, Non-FAOA, and Hybrid Electronic Resources in the Libraries’ Collections, which now guides the Libraries' collection and management of FAOA resources.

Nikki Rech is the Sustainability Librarian at Georgia Southern University. She has been the Affordable Learning Georgia Library Champion for the past six years. In this role, she actively curates available OER materials to support Georgia Southern's Curriculum, teaches workshops to educate on OER, Open Pedagogy, and other aspects of Open, guides faculty in understanding and determining proper licensing for OER materials, and applying for grant funding to support their OER work. Nikki has published and presented on multiple aspects of OER and OEP, specifically on the qualities of OER beyond the affordability to students.
