Description of Work

Most people know Marietta Square as a beautiful place to picnic, shop, eat, take pictures, etc. However, many people do not know that The Square was once a small, tight-knit community that did not know that World War II would affect their future community and Marietta’s population. With the war came new economic opportunities, especially with the construction of the Bell Bomber Plant, which provided jobs for thousands, causing them to move to Marietta. In addition, an increase in people moving to Marietta calls for the addition of more beds added to the local hospital. With a population growing exponentially, adding more beds and not space became absurd, so congressional leaders began discussing the next steps they would have to take. This led to the construction of the Kennestone Hospital in 1947. With all this in mind, the development of the Marietta Hospital from 1909 into the Kennestone Hospital in 1950 best exemplifies how World War II affected the population growth of Marietta which helped to cultivate the “modern” purpose for hospitals seen today.
