Abstract
Trait-based approaches are increasingly used to link organismal characteristics to ecological processes, yet they often overlook intraspecific trait variation (ITV), particularly in parasite taxa, which remains poorly understood. Most parasitological studies focus on species-level differences (interspecific trait variation), overlooking how variability within species influences host-parasite dynamics, transmission, and ecosystem functioning. Despite its potential importance, quantitative assessments of ITV in trematodes are scarce, representing a major knowledge gap. Additionally, interspecific and intraspecific trait variation have rarely been examined together in parasite studies. This study quantifies functional traits of trematodes, such as body size and sucker size, infecting Tree Shrews (Tupaia spp.). I hypothesize that variation in parasite functional traits is driven primarily by parasite morpho-species rather than by host species. The observed trait variation reflects intraspecific variation among parasite morphotypes rather than host-driven differences.
