Abstract
The opioid crisis is a public health challenge that includes widespread use and misuse of opioids, opioid addiction, and overdose deaths (Parkin et al., 2020). Opioids are a class of medications that include prescription analgesics as well as illicit (illegal) drugs. The opioid epidemic began between 1990 and 2000 as healthcare providers began prescribing opioids at alarming rates, which led to misuse, abuse, and addiction. The overall effects of opioid use disorder (OUD) include increased healthcare costs, socioeconomic challenges, and poor health outcomes. Cooperation among healthcare organizations, law enforcement, public policy, and community outreach is required to support patients with OUD.
