What is the Sowing Seeds Literacy Project?
Conceptualized and developed by Dr. Viakinnou-Brinson and in partnership with the Seeds of Knowledge, Inc, a 501 (c) 3 non-profit educational organization, the Sowing Seeds Literacy initiative is a project-based learning approach to teaching reading, writing and cultural awareness. In this project French students apply gained cultural knowledge, writing, research and creative skills to create children’s books for tangible local and international audiences.
Why is the project important?
The project is in alignment with students’ learning outcomes and with the 5 cs of the National Standards of Foreign Language Learning (Communities, Comparisons, Connections, Culture, and Communication). It gives students an authentic audience for whom to write and provides supplementary reading material for children in underserved communities in Africa and the Caribbean. Students participating in the project express a sense of pride when seeing others read their book and as a result, they demonstrate an increased sense of writing self-efficacy and confidence in their course work.
