Abstract
This article explores state- sponsored campaigns for conscripts in early-twentieth-century Argentina. Through the analysis of the debates in the pages of El Monitor de Education Comiin, inspectors' reports, and the materials used in military schools, it delves into the formation of the barracks as a privileged space for the patriotic education of the "uneducated" and "illiterate" male youth. In this vein, this text highlights the deep connections between cultural diagnose s about the population and notions of heterogeneity, nation, and democracy.
