Abstract

Given that “most individuals who become department chairs have neither leadership preparation nor a clear understanding of what the job entails” (Wolverton, Ackerman, and Holt 2005), the professional development of new chairs is critical. Recognizing this need, an experienced chair who had recently accepted a chair's position in a different department at our university sought ways to develop a campus-wide community of new and experienced chairs that would have administrative development benefits for all participants.
