Abstract
There is a commonality between methods that artists employ in portraying their subjects and the methods that those studying nature employ in learning about the world, and this similarity can provide encouragement in leading science students to study nature via art. In understanding how beneficial drawing can be to science, consider that both the natural scientist and the artist must view their subjects in the same manner, that is, outside of their normal context. In science, scientists must see anew in order to develop truly original ideas and insights. Seeing things anew is also central to learning how to draw. In this article, the author provides suggestions for creating a naturalist's journal, as well as an example of a journal prompt.
