Abstract

The article presents information on the 1974 Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and the "Guide to FERPA" published by the Freedom Information Committee of the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ). FERPA has the ability to protect the confidentiality of student records and can threaten schools with cuts in federal funding when they release education records without consent. It also notes exceptions to FERPA privacy provisions as to law enforcement records.
