Abstract

The phenomenon of cookies was used in this study as a surrogate for user attitudes and awareness of automatic data collection. Why would user awareness of cookies correlate with their behavior regarding Web browsing, while their attitudes do not? One explanation is that many users become aware of cookies but don't understand the real implications when they disable the cookies in their browsers.
