Abstract
Great South Metals (GSM) of Acworth, Georgia provides steel slitting services to a variety of customers. In July 2024, ISYE 4902 Group 2 (Group2) began a consulting relationship with GSM with the intended purpose of process improvement and corrective maintenance. Three major objectives are defined for this Fall 2024 project: perform corrective maintenance on 60” slitter line banding table; provide a solution for crane load monitoring; develop a 5S methodology for GSM’s facility.
Group 2 employed root causes analysis to identify and correct mechanical issues related to the slitter line banding table. Expected average banding table process-time dropped from 3 minutes to 2 minutes 15 seconds.
Group 2 researched crane hoist electronics in order to find a retrofit solution for crane load monitoring. Monitoring equipment provides GSM with the ability to predict component failures and minimize crane downtime.
Group 2 worked with GSM to develop a comprehensive 5S plan for the Acworth slitting facility. Group 2 provided recommendations with particular focus on cleanliness, safety, and ergonomics.
