Abstract
This qualitative research study seeks to explore and understand the perspectives of Black students at a rural middle school towards positive behavior interventions and support programs (PBIS) with an emphasis on the impact of such programs on Black students. The research draws upon positive behavior and support programs aimed at improving discipline outcomes for Black students with an emphasis on exploring culturally relevant pedagogies which guides the investigation into the perceived impact of PBIS on Black students. The study uses a phenomenological design to answer one research question that is focused on the perspectives of students and the components of the overall PBIS program. Through the collection of data using semi-structured interviews, this research will provide an opportunity for students to contribute to valuable research aimed at addressing disproportionate discipline and equity in education. Student contributions may offer increased school leaders’ knowledge about the specific needs of this unique student population and how incorporating student culture may lead to improved educational outcomes and the development of PBIS practices that are culturally relevant for Black students.
