Description

In the digital age, reading has evolved beyond traditional print, with digital texts becoming increasingly common in education, especially as OER grows. This presentation explores how students perceive digital reading in academic contexts. In Fall 2024 Rockland Community College started a project to train students to be better digital readers using research based strategies on active reading. We will share the strategies we taught our students and the results of our students' perceptions of digital reading from the beginning of the project to the end. We will explore the advantages and limitations of digital reading and OER, shedding light on the impact on student learning experience.

DEI Statement

Open Educational Resources (OER) have transformed learning by providing free, and accessible materials for students and educators. While digital reading offers benefits such as portability, interactivity, and cost savings, it also presents challenges, including screen fatigue, lower retention rates, and distractions. Understanding how students perceive digital reading and OER is essential for educators striving to improve engagement and learning outcomes for all students.
