Abstract (300 words maximum)

As the Graduate Research Assistant for the English Department, I work closely with many of Kennesaw State’s faculty on their projects. My role encompasses a variety of tasks, including compiling sources, transcribing data, and editing documents. I have also done a substantial amount of research for professors’ books. My presentation provides an overview of each project I have worked on over the semester (3-5 in total). I have conducted interviews with each of these professors about their work, and how it influenced them both personally and professionally. My presentation displays highlights from these conversations as professors reflect on the challenges and successes of their projects. One example I will discuss is a book about the censorship of queer literature from classrooms, which I have done extensive research for. Another is an Open Educational Resource (OER) American literature textbook that I helped edit and find photos for. This presentation discusses my role as a research assistant, the knowledge I have gained through this experience, and additional insights from the professors on their individual projects. As someone who aspires to become an academic someday, this project is meant to showcase a variety of perspectives on topics within “English.” I seek to highlight the subject’s spectrum of niches, while also building a more thorough understanding of the processes behind publishing. My presentation aims to synthesize these unique experiences to draw a larger conclusion about the role of research in academia.
