Abstract

Since its first edition, this book has been an excellent contribution to the field of Geographic Information Systems (GIS). This fourth edition is considerably improved over the previous edition in terms of both extraordinary breadth of subject matter covered and the straightforward manner in which the information is presented. In four sections and 340 pages total, Getting Started With GIS covers the core of most GIS applications needed to address fundamental spatial questions such as where, what, and why. This very readable text is logically ordered with each chapter nicely balanced between GIS concepts and its practical applications. Throughout the book, important web addresses are included for further reference, although these risk becoming outdated if the test is not regularly revised. Altogether, each chapter and book as a whole builds upon basic concepts, then focuses on practical scope and provides the resources for readers to think critically about spatial problems. Clarke’s writing style conveys the information in a breezy manner that readily brings excitement in readers and motivates them to continue reading. Numerous charts, maps, and illustrations presented in each chapter bring forth the GIS concepts and themes in a manner easily grasped. The inclusion of appropriate phrases and anecdotes as well as appropriate cartoons add humor to the subject matter. Inclusion of interviews with GIS scientists and researchers is a nice addition that further humanizes the subject. At the end of each chapter, study guides, questions, exercises, and citations, including key terms and definitions, are presented very elegantly. A glossary of GIS terms and definitions presented toward the end of the book is especially valuable to help readers unfamiliar with GIS ja
