Abstract
Successful recycling programs at colleges and universities require active student, faculty, and staff participation. Such programs often have to be funded by additional student fees, but increasing tuition rates leave students divided on their level of support for the program. Nevertheless, such debate increases environmental awareness and students' concern about university policy. A sample of 120 students at Southwest Texas State University, San Marcos, Texas were asked 15 questions regarding recycling . The survey revealed that students would support an increase in the number of recycling bins on campus, though they are in need of instruction on how and where- to recycle. During the 2000- 2001 academic year, students initiated an enhanced environmental program that would be funded by a $1.00 per semester student fee. This program was to fund an expanded recycling program and, recycling education and pUblicity. The efforts to implement the program sparked campus-wide interest and support, but unfortunately did not receive the necessary Texas legislature approval. Nevertheless, the program heightened campus-wide environmental awareness, and increased purchase of recycled paper by university administration.
