Abstract
Being a geographer often carries with it the opportunities, pleasures and burdens of working with colleagues from other disciplines. Those opportunities may come in teaching a shared class, in pursuing an inter-departmental curriculum, in carrying out research, or in addressing an issue of public policy. I have shared in all those ways, beginning as a green young graduate student working with engineers, economists, and foresters in a cooperative study. Always I have enjoyed new ideas and methods. Sometimes I have helped other disciplines gain strength from geography. And occasionally it has been frustrating to see geographic ideas ignored. The latter is illustrated by current experience with the International Decade for Natural Disaster Reduction.
