Abstract
A distinguished chemist once said to me, "Good science is good fun; if it's not good fun, it's probably not good science either." His remark has remained lodged in my memory, and it has often troubled me, because so much of the fun seems to have gone out of geography, especially for many geographers who did their graduate work in the 1960s and 1970s, who are pathetically eager to be recognized as scientists.
