Abstract

A fundamental technique to convey quantitative information on maps is use of symbols.' Four of the most common symbols for this purpose are circle sectors, bar segments, graduated squares and graduated circles . 2 The ability of these four symbols to communicate accurate information to map readers has been the subject of research by those interested in the cognitive process. The purpose of the research reported here was to compare these four symbols in terms of how accurately they were perceived by test subjects. The results of this research indicate some symbols were perceived more accurately than others. This should help cartographers to design quantitative maps.
