Abstract

As the number of new oil fields and the further development of existing ones continues to decline, more and more attention is being given to other sources of energy such as coal, solar, hydroelectric, and nuclear power plants. Of the alternate energy sources listed above, the potentially most dangerous is probably nuclear energy. The danger comes from the waste products produced by generating electricity and the nuclear fuel cycle. During the nuclear fuel cycle-where uranium is enriched for use in nuclear generators-many waste by-products are generated, but the most radioactive occur at the end of the cycle. Nuclear waste, ranging from laboratory clothing that may not be contaminated by radiation but has been worn by workers near the generators, to highly radioactive spent fuel rods, is considered hazardous and must be disposed in such a manner so that the waste is isolated from the environment until it becomes harmless and will not pose a threat to man
