Abstract

A-P-A-T-H-Y is defined as "Indifference to what appeals to feelings or interests." Apathy lacks constructiveness. In extreme form it denotes a major negative quality. Members of the academic community should not display ~pathy; yet there are any of us to whom the adjective II pathetic" may apply. My opinion invites challenge. If I am not conre ted, apparently my comments are appropriate, and my audience is truly apathetic. First, I would like to challenge students of geography, especially those in Gamma Theta Upsilon. As a supposedly inte lectually elite 9 oup, I would expect them to participate in the advancement and dissemination of knowledge in the discipline. The Geographical Bulletin, the sc olarly journal of our honorary society, is a logical potential outlet for student articles. As editor, however, I have received very few manuscripts from our student members. Although they may be submitting manuscripts to The Annals or other such journals in the field, I suspect that the majority are being returned to their authors with rejection etters. Competition with faculty-written articles is fierce for space in those journals. Even though The Geographical Bulletin is a studentoriented publication, its standards are set at a similarly high level. Consequently, students should feel pride in seeing their research published in this journal.
