Abstract

In a conversation with Dr. Carter, at the Annual Meeting of the Association of American Geographers in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, a year ago, he discussed some of the recent findings of investigators of ancient civilizations and particularly their new information regarding worldwide travel of those societies. Because exploration geography is a field that is neglected by most research geographers, and because some students feel that there are few new research areas to become involved in, I asked Dr. Carter if he he could write, for student consumption, an article which would demonstrate the attractiveness of exploration geography as a research career. He has done just that. It is my hope that students are as attracted to this article as those of us who reviewed it. Another article is presented by Gary Freedom of The University of Tennessee. It is a response to a view of military geography expressed by Bruce Graves in a recent issue of The Geographic Bulletin. The Graves article has aroused controversy. Mr. Freedom has written a reasoned response. The third item in this issue is by Brian Dyck of Oregon State University. (You may remember his poem which was printed here sometime ago.) It is a good beginning study of an expanding activity-bicycling.
