Abstract

Comprehension of the meaning of military geography is far more complex than it first appears. Traditionally military geography loosely encompasses the whole field of geographic activity required for the direction of organized military forces. The term "military" includes activities by which man performs characteristics that are generally referred to as soldierly in practice. The weight of this definition is magnified by the importance of strategy exercised at a given time. Scholars who perceive a sub-discipline as having a distinctive characteristic that is basically a sub-division of a whole field of academic study, may at first glance, see a direct relation between geographic knowledge and military doctrine. However, that distinction of character becomes quite obscure when one treats military and geography as separate identities
