Abstract
Digital lending has revolutionized libraries, adding a trove of available titles and increased accessibility and convenience to patrons. However, handling of patron privacy when utilizing e-lending services is an area that has not received much attention. This paper examines reasons why libraries and patrons alike should be concerned about privacy and the harvest of data when engaging in e-lending through a non-library entity. Examples of mishandling of patron data are discussed in this paper. Recommendations for legislative and non-legislative actions that libraries can take to uphold the American Library Associa-tion core values of intellectual freedom and privacy are also discussed. These suggestions are meant to empower patrons with knowledge to make a more informed decision when accessing digital materials.
