Abstract

The title compd. (I) was prepd. by reducing biphenyl II (R = CO2H) with LiAlH4, brominating the resulting II (R = CH2OH) with 48% HBr, and cyclizing the resulting II (R = CH2Br) with Se in the presence of Na formaldehyde sulfoxylate and NaOH.
