Abstract
"designs and strategies for urban play-scapes and the notion of a deployable play-city"
Through the proliferation of exclusively visual stimuli urbanites are growing disconnected from their peers. People need tangible and physical stimuli in the built environment. Emergence is the tendency for a population to connect without any preconceived notion of such. Emergence is a critical term in the discussion of growing urban isolation. Emergence and play are intertwined, both are critical in addressing urban disconnection. Using architecture, emergence will guarantee a resurgence in urban connectivity.
People need play.
This thesis will generate positive disruption to reengage street citizens and develop evolving urban play-scapes. People need play Through the use of modular and deployable architecture along with architectural games these urban playscapes will connect the environment through nodes of play; these play nodes will thus create a new play city accessible for all street going citizens. these scapes should be available to the general urban public and likewise transportable. The ease of maintenance and modular nature will increase the lifespan of the designed objects. The outcome of this thesis will be a new urban play-scape typology implementing urban theory and a complete set of architectural identities. These identities will stimulate preexisting urban spaces, conditions, and the people within.
