"The Mystery of the World": On the Criticism of Fairfield Porter

Abstract

The article discusses the poetry critiques of 20th century literary critic and artist Fairfield Porter, who compared poetry to painting, and describes his critique of poets such as Elizabeth Bishop and John Ashbery. Artistic realism versus abstraction is discussed, as well as Porter's paintings such as "Katie and Anne." Artists such as Willem de Kooning and Alex Katz are mentioned, and Porter's correspondence with poet James Schuyler is discussed.
