Abstract

Used a within-Ss design to determine gender differences in preference for over-reward and tolerance of under-reward.Differences were based on the equity of starting salary and time until 1st promotion described in a job search exercise. Ss were 34 female and 54 male university students (aged 19–42 yrs). Women had lower preference than men for over-reward for both starting salary and time until 1st promotion, but there were no gender differences in tolerance of under-reward.
