Abstract

An essay is presented on the emergence of modern bodybuilding as portrayed by Eugen Sandow, an internationally acclaimed apotheosis of male beauty and physique in the 1890s. It traces the exploits of Sandow, when he became an icon in physical culture, the contemporary term for body building. It also highlights the artwork of Aubrey Hunt, an English artist who became interested to Sandow, having highly-chiseled body. It was in April 1893 that Sandow became famous in Great Britain and Europe.
